A winter stay in Tupper Lake: Trolls, trails, stargazing & nighttime fun

Winter in the Adirondacks doesn’t have to mean spending every minute on the slopes or waiting for the perfect snow day. In Tupper Lake, you can wander through the woods in search of a giant troll, explore some of the area's darkest night skies, ski peaceful cross-country trails, and finish the day with a movie or a few rounds of bowling and arcade fun.

Whether you’re planning a winter getaway with the family, a weekend with friends, or a quiet escape to the Adirondacks, this itinerary makes it easy to experience a little bit of everything. And the best part? There’s plenty to do even without snow!

Morning: Meet a troll at The Wild Center

Start your day at The Wild Center, where nature, art, and magic come together. Bundle up and head outdoors to meet the museum’s newest permanent resident, Patrick Sapling, a wooden troll created by acclaimed Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

Patrick Sapling joined The Wild Center in September 2026, making his home with the Adirondack boulders and trees. Built from reclaimed wood and other salvaged materials, this unique sculpture depicts a troll lifting a young sugar maple toward the sun. It’s a memorable sight any time of year but there’s something enchanting about wandering the forest paths with a dusting of snow.

Take your time exploring outside, then head in to discover the museum’s exhibits and learn more about the natural world. Check the calendar for Wild Lights, when illuminated trails, music, and colorful displays transform the campus after dark.

No snow? No problem! You can still meet Patrick Sapling, explore the outdoor campus and spend time with the indoor exhibits. Just bring sturdy footwear and check current hours and trail conditions before your visit.

Afternoon: Explore the trails

Once you’ve had your fill of the museum, it’s time to get outside again. When snow conditions cooperate, the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails are a great place to experience winter the Adirondack way.

Located at the Tupper Lake Golf Club, this free, groomed trail network offers cross-country skiing for a range of experience. Beginners can start with a gentler loop and more experienced skiers can venture farther into the surrounding woods. Along the way, enjoy the forest scenery, open views, and a quiet winter escape.

If you don’t have your own gear, check local rental options before heading out and always check trail conditions to make sure the snow is ready for skiing.

No snow? No problem! Swap your skis for a pair of sturdy hiking boots and enjoy a walk on the open trail. The Frenette network is also used for hiking and other outdoor recreation when conditions permit. If the trails are wet, icy, or muddy, choose another activity rather than risking slippery conditions.

Evening: Discover the stars

After a day spent exploring the woods, turn your attention to the wilderness above.

Tupper Lake is known for its dark skies, making it a perfect destination for anyone who has ever wanted to see more of the universe. The Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory hosts free public stargazing opportunities! Just bring yourself and your chair for this incredible experience.

When conditions are right, the observatory’s roll off roof opens to reveal the night sky. Depending on the evening, you might spot planets, stars, or other fascinating objects with help from knowledgeable volunteers.

Sessions are weather dependent, so check the Sky Center’s social media before heading over. If no program is scheduled, you can still find a dark spot to look up on your own. Bring warm layers and enjoy the simple experience of watching the stars over the Adirondacks.

If the sky is cloudy: Save stargazing for another night and enjoy a relaxed evening in town instead.

Nighttime: A fun finish

Done with outdoor exploring? There’s nothing wrong with trading your winter boots for something a little more comfortable.

Stop by Lakeview Lanes for dinner followed by a round of bowling and arcade games. It’s a fun and laid-back way to spend the evening.

If you’re looking for a quieter night, check the schedule at the historic Adirondack State Theater in downtown Tupper Lake to see what’s playing. Grab some popcorn and settle in for a classic small town movie night.

Either way, you’ll have an easy going end to a day packed with Adirondack adventures.

Stay for longer!

There’s plenty of reason to stick around. Spend another morning shopping, discover more of Tupper Lake’s trails, or head out for a winter hike. Don’t forget the local events calendar for seasonal happenings.

The great part about a Tupper Lake winter trip is that you don’t have to plan every hour around the weather. A snowy day calls for cross-country skiing, while a milder one could be perfect for hiking, exploring indoors, or roam around town.

Pack your layers and come see what winter in Tupper Lake has waiting for you.
