Raquette Pond to Setting Pole Dam

This unique Triad paddle will guide you through an area that isn’t often explored. The Raquette River winds its way 146-mile long through the Adirondacks before ending in the St. Lawrence River. Because of the gentle, flatwater nature of this section, it can be popular for paddlers who will enjoy the river's twists and turns.

How to get there

From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 30 in Tupper Lake, follow Route 3 towards Piercefield. The boat launch is located in the Tupper Lake Waterfront Park, across the street from McDonald's. You can park in the lot at the park and launch right there.

To get to Setting Pole Dam, head towards Piercefield on Route 3. Just outside of Tupper Lake you will find Setting Pole Dam Road on your left after about 4.5 miles. Continue down this road until you meet a stop sign, then turn right. This will take you right to a parking area at the dam. 

We recommend spotting one car and making a one-way trip. However, paddling out and back is pleasant, too.

Paddling

This is a great paddle if you want to spend a couple hours on the water. You will meander down the Raquette River for three miles before you approach Setting Pole Dam. This paddle will take you about half a day round-trip. When you arrive at Setting Pole Dam, please be careful and stay to the side to avoid the dam. There are no portages. 

Fishing

Bring your pole along on your paddling trip! The fishing here is said to be plentiful.
