Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ages for different levels of play?

T-ball is for 4-5 year olds. Coach Pitch is for 6-8 year olds. Minors Baseball is for 9 and 10 year olds. Majors Baseball is for 11 and 12 year olds. The age cutoff is April 30 for these levels.

Softball goes by grade. Minors Softball is for girls in grades 3, 4 and 5. Majors softball is for girls in grades 6, 7, 8.  *Note these are grade levels at the time of registration

What days of the week will games and practices take place?

We follow SLYBSA schedule, they make every effort to try and host games and practices on a consistent schedule. Sometimes, field availability and the weather can change that.

What equipment does my child need to play?

Typically, the only thing a kid needs to play is a glove. Minors and Major players will be asked to purchase/wear certain color pants. (baseball/softball pants are not provided but some coaches hold old inventory)

The Tupper Lae Recreation Department will supply all other equipment, including helmets, bats, balls, catcher’s equipment and more, although many kids come with their own helmets and bats. NOTE: Bats used for game play in majors and minors baseball must be stamped as USA Baseball certified (not USSSA or BBCOR).

What is the age cutoff date for players in each level?

The cutoff date for Minors and Majors Baseball is April 30.  For example, if your child turns 9 on April 30, they are able to play Minors Baseball. If they do not turn 9 until May 1, they will play in Coach Pitch. For Softball, there is no cutoff date - eligibility is determined based on grade (see above).

I’d like to move my kid up to the next level, even though he/she isn’t old enough yet. Is that possible?

We generally encourages all players to remain in the level of play designated for their age. In certain circumstances, the Recreation Department will consider moving up a player due to his/her skill level or other circumstances, for example, when keeping a player in his/her current age group could create a safety concern for other players. In the past, we have also moved up a player when that player’s parent is needed to coach at that higher level.

Requests to play up are granted on an individual basis and must be approved by the Recreation Department following a request from a parent/guardian. An evaluation of the player’s skill level and/or consultation with the player’s current or past coach or coaches may be required to make this determination.

How much does registration cost? Is there help available if I can’t afford it?

Registration is $35 for Tball and Coach Pitch. All other levels are $50.

There are scholarships available if you are in need of financial assistance.. Contact tupperyouthcoordinator@gmail.com
