Best fished from a boat, that requires a 0.4-mile portage from Tupper Lake, this pond is a great choice for those looking for something off the beaten path.
Getting there
From the intersection of Route 30 and 3 in Tupper Lake, follow Route 30 toward Long Lake. Continue for about 9 miles and turn right on Route 421 (Horseshoe Lake Road). Follow that for roughly 4 miles to the trailhead on the right. The trailhead is obscure, with a small DEC sign on a tree that's set back in the woods.
Fishing
Shoreline access is limited but decent at the end of the trail, near the campsite. If the water is low the shore becomes much more accessible.
It is best fished from a boat, that requires a 0.4-mile portage from Tupper Lake. The portage is cartop-only access. It can be found in a western bay of the lake. The closest launch area for a canoe or kayak is either from Route 30 or from Bog River Falls.
Insider information:
- Fish the small islands for the best results.
- Its wilderness and the effort required to reach the pond make this a gem with very little use.
- The brook trout fishing is excellent.
