Black Birders Week Celebration

Saturday, May 30, 2026

Join the Adirondack community in celebrating National Black Birders Week with a special evening conversation featuring renowned ornithologist, naturalist, and author Dr. J. Drew Lanham.

National Black Birders Week (May 24–30, 2026) is a nationwide celebration promoting diversity, representation, and inclusion in outdoor spaces and birding communities. The Adirondack celebration invites participants of all experience levels to connect with nature and each other.

Hosted by the Adirondack Diversity Initiative and John Brown Lives!, this event highlights diversity in the outdoors while bringing together birders, nature enthusiasts, and community members for an inspiring and meaningful experience.

The evening begins with a talk and conversation with Dr. Lanham, followed by a reception and book sale featuring several of his acclaimed works, including The Home Place, Sparrow Envy, and Joy Is the Justice We Give Ourselves. Additional Black Birders Week activities, including bird walks and workshops, will also take place throughout the day at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid.
