Late August is a wonderful time in the Adirondacks. Summer breezes ripple the surface of the beautiful lakes and ponds, and puffy clouds decorate the sky. Since most of summer’s humid days are in the past, sunsets can be quite dramatic, and nights can be clear and crisp with lots of stars and maybe a few meteors. We might photograph along some of The Wild Center trails, but we’ll most likely travel to various photo destinations within a half hour or so of The Wild Center.

The afternoon will start in The Wild Center conference room with a brief introduction, followed by a discussion on night photography and question and answer session. Afterward, we’ll spend the rest of the day photographing at various photo destinations selected according to the weather. This will offer plenty of time for practicing various shooting techniques through the afternoon, evening, and night. There will be some walking involved, but there is easy access to any of the photo locations. All types of camera equipment could be used, including macro lenses and extension tubes, and wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Please bring along insect protection as well as an umbrella and wet weather protection for possible showers, and a headlamp for walking and working with the camera after sunset. We could use the headlamps or other light sources for light painting subjects after dark, too.

The Wild Center is open until 5 PM, but since we will be in the field the rest of the day, be sure to have along food, snacks, water, and extra clothing for the rest of the evening. Also, please make sure to have a good sturdy tripod, at least one extra fully charged battery, the camera manual, and extra memory cards. Photographer, Carl Heilman II, has been photographing the Adirondacks since the mid 1970s and has been working with digital images since 1997. He has led photo workshops since the early 1990s and has been presenting photography workshops in Brant Lake since 1997 through Wild Visions, Inc. His coffee table books on the Adirondacks, Lake George, New York State, and Maine have been published by Rizzoli, Voyageur Press, and North Country Books. His AV programs have aired on regional PBS stations, and he was interviewed for the May 2008 national PBS special; The Adirondacks;. His photo techniques book, ‘The Landscape Photography Field Guide’, is a comprehensive handbook about landscape photography techniques. ‘101 Top Tips for Digital Landscape Photography’, is published by Ilex Press, and ‘Photographing the Adirondacks’, is a regional guidebook to more than 200 photo locations throughout the Adirondack Park.
