The other day my mother and I decided to go up to the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails after work to enjoy a late afternoon ski. We had just gotten some fresh snow, and the temperatures were in the high-20s/low-30s — it was the making for a great afternoon outside! We headed up around 4:30, just as the sun was starting to set. We were prepared with headlamps in case we stayed longer than expected and it got dark out. I love skiing at this time of day, I think of it as a way to wind down after work, and it is also great exercise!

There are a lot of good options, but at night we usually do the Cranberry Pond Loop which is only about one-mile long and has great scenic views from the trail. Afterward, we headed to Raquette River Brewery to reward ourselves for all the work we had just done. What better place to relax after an afternoon outside than the brewery? Instead of telling you all about our ski, I’ll let you see it for yourself through some photos I took along the way.

The groomers do a fabulous job, the trails are always in tip-top shape and perfect condition. When we went they were perfectly groomed and fast! Making the skiing that much more fun.

Skiing along with views like these make me think that paradise doesn't always have to be somewhere tropical... It may be right here on a 30-degree day!

At the end of our ski, my pup Ruger and I went to watch the rest of the sunset. I couldn't help but think about how lucky we are to have these trails at our disposal.

As we were taking our boots off and getting our gear back into the car, the sun was just finishing setting on a beautiful ADK winter day. We made it out before dark!

Ending the day at Raquette River Brewing did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed my platter of meats, cheeses, and bread, plus a beer! What more could I ask for? It was the perfect refuel option after our ski.

Discover all of our cross-country ski trails, then discover a spot in town to refuel, it will be the best decision you make!

Check out upcoming events at the Groomed Trails too!
