In the colder seasons, the Adirondacks become a winter wonderland filled with countless opportunities for outdoor adventure and indoor fun. Winter is the ideal time to bring the family to try out winter sports for the first time or to hone those cross-country ski skills. It's also great to be indoors, especially after a day of playing in the snow. Either way, the family will have plenty to do here. Below are some suggestions for family or group activities that are fun for all ages.

Sledding

The sledding hill at the Tupper Lake Golf Course, right at the home base of the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails' cross-country ski trail network, is free and open to the public. Grab a sled, toboggan, or even an old-fashioned repurposed laundry basket to experience this giant slide in the snow. It's great fun for all ages.

Snowshoeing

You don't have to give up on hiking just because it's winter! Strap on a pair of snowshoes and enjoy the snow-covered trails in and around Tupper Lake. The groomed James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails are snowshoe friendly and offer connectors to Big Tupper Ski Area. Complimentary snowshoes are offered to all guests at The Wild Center with paid admission.

Adirondack State Theater

Located right downtown on Main Street, this historic theater first opened its doors in 1914. It's a great place to relax indoors after a day of outdoor adventure. They are the only theater showing 3D movies in the Adirondacks.

Lakeview Lanes

There's more fun to be had indoors at the bowling alley. Lakeview Lanes offers hours of affordable fun with open bowling and/or cosmic bowling. The attached sports bar is the perfect spot to kick back with a cold one as you watch the game.

Tupper Arts Center

This gallery, retail space, and educational center opened its doors in summer 2018. Check out the local talent in this community oriented space.

The Wild Center

The Wild Center has a 54,000-square-foot indoor space that's swimming with live exhibits including river otters, multi-media shows, and tons of hands-on experiences. During the winter, you receive complimentary snowshoes with admission which means you can snowshoe on the surrounding trails. These scenic trails are mostly level and great for beginners.

The Adirondack Sky and Observatory Center

Come see the iconic, magical Adirondack starry sky at this observatory center. They offer educational opportunities and many stargazing events.

This list is just the beginning. Start planning your trip to Tupper Lake today. Our many lodgings and restaurants are located right in the middle of it all!
